Essex 15mm ACW
Band Musicians

Figures

by Paul Koch

Our esteemed and beloved editor has finally given your servant a set of 15mm figures to review. This is a feat of no small courage. I knew naming one of the brigades in my On To Richmond game in which he played at Historicon would pay off. In the past I have made it all to clear that 15s are hardly my favorite scale.

Over time, I have mellowed to the point of even liking some of the little twerps. The quality of the figures have certainly vastly improved over the years, and once in a while, something really fresh and different comes along that is worth collecting out of your favorite scale. Such is the little military band from Essex Miniatures. The almost continuous re-watching of my Gettysburg video tape demonstrates the ubiquitous nature of the army band during the period.

I have for years favored the playing of period martial music in the background for my own games. From now on I will have a source for it. These little guys are cast quite well and measure 17M on the Barrett Scale. They actually look better under magnification. One caution, what looks like flash at careless first glance are actually arms that need glueing to instruments and shoulders. These are a can't miss item and are most highly recommended! On the KOCH MUST HAVE INDEX they rate a 10. Available from Wargames, Box 278, Triadelphia, WV 26059

* The Courier uses the Tobey Barrett Measurement [BM] System to simplify comparison of figure sizes. The number is the height in millimeters from the bottom of the figure's foot (top of base) to its eyes. The letter refers to the "heft" of the figure: L=light, M=medium, and H=heavy. Thus, Hs will fit in with other Hs and some Ms, but not Ls.
