Viking Forge

1/285 WWII

by Bill Rutherford

I picked up two new (to me) releases from the Viking Forge while at Historicon '91. The first was a DeHaviland Mosquito Mk IX This is a nice model, but seems a bit narrow in the forward fuselage and somewhat bulbous in the nose. When painted, the plane looks just fine, however; the fuselage looks ok, and a bit of judicious filework around the nose will alter it to the desired shape. This isn't really a problem, as different marks of Mosquitos had slightly different shapes to their noses, depending on just what was inside them, and there's just enough nose there to recreate any of them...

The other release was a pack of American WW II 90mm antiaircraft guns. This appears to be the M1 gun and is nicely done, but is missing the noticeable outrigger stabilizers that characterized the M1A1 chassis. These are easily added from plastic sprue, though. When you consider that there's only one other Allied towed antiaircraft gun on the market (40mm Bofors), there's really little to complain about. Both of these are available from your local hobby dealer, or directly from the Viking Forge, 1727 Theresa Lane, Powhatan, VA 23139. The Mosquito sells for $3.50 and the antiaircraft guns sell for 6/$4.00. They're both worthwhile additions to your microarmy,
