by Jim Birdseye
Written by Jim R. Arnold erstwhile Napoleonic Editor of The Courier, this is a detailed study of the personalities and events of the 1809 campaign and the months preceding it. Jim has done a solid job describing the events in a way that is both easy to follow and detailed. Jim uses a time-line reporting system for the early pre-campaign period he calls "the diplomatic war." But once the campaign starts he switches to the familiar historical prose that most readers expect. Jim sees the campaign through both the historian's and the wargamer's eyes. His text includesthe orders of battle and fairly detailed maps. The whole work is 286 pages and is quite well done with some keen observations on the nature of the campaign and on the events both in Austria and out that influenced its outcome. I can whole-heartily recommend this book to anyone interested in the Napoleonic period from either an historical or gaming angle. It is well illustrated and well presented. Available hard bound, for $22.95 from Paragon House, 90 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY, 10011 or from most Hobby retailers. More Reviews
