Harpoon Annex

1990-91

by J. Lane

There is an expansion and update of the data for Harpoon. The book, at 131 pages, is more than double the size of the original. It covers the changes in weapons, sensors, and platforms since the middle 1980s.The navies of Japan and the smaller Western European countries are also included. Many of the ships and subs already appeared in the three Forms books.

The other major addition is a two page rules supplement for figuring out aircraft endurance. The rule requires some calculations and all but the simplest missions will have to be pre-planned. An Aircraft Mission Planning Form is provided that steps you through the process. Annex B, Aircraft, now lists the base range of each plane and weapons loads now include drop tanks. The rule should be particularly useful in campaigns and sub hunting scenarios.

One minor problem is the reorganization of the ship data. In the original Data Annex ships were organized chronologically by type. This made it easy to design a scenario since all the frigates were together. In the 1990-91 Data Annex ships are listed solely in alphabetical order.

The Data Annex is a "must have" for any Harpoon player; it is also a wonderful collection of data for modern naval systems in general. The new Annex is to be included in all new boxed sets of Harpoon. It is also available separately from local stores or direct from GDW, P.O. Box 1646, Bloomington, IL 61702 for $10 + $1 postage.
