Armies of Germany and Rhine Confed.
1792-1815

(book)

by Jim Birdseye

Volume 1. By G.F. Nafziger, Illustrated by M. Gilbert. This work has 97 pages plus tables, illustrations, and a bibliography. Nafziger offers a hard detailed look at the "armies" of Anhalt, Saxon Ducal Houses,Hesse-Darmstadt, Frankfurt, Nassau, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, and Mecklenburg-Strelitz. The study includes the history , organization, and equipment of these smaller elements of the Confederation of the Rhein. For those of you who can't use painting guide that isn't filled with full color plates, you'll miss a lot of good information and some units not usually treated by other feature series if you pass these up. Plus you'll get a picture of these units through the whole Napoleonic period rather than a single snapshot for one year. Nafziger has done an excellent job of primary research in preparing these mini-chapters on each principality. He has elected to use the German titles for the soldiers in the units. This is an excellent decision because many of these titles do not have English equivalents. For thos eof you seriously interested in the Napoleonic period I can recommend this series. These texts come soft covered and are available from G.F. Nafziger, 8801 Tammy Dr., West Chester, Ch. 45069 for $12.95 plus $1.00 shipping.
