John Ford

Wild West Figures

by Paul Koch

There are two kinds of people in the world - those who grew up loving the John Ford/John Wayne cavalry movies and the other kind. My early years were spent on a steady diet of trooper Tyree, Sergeant Quincannon and Captain Nathan Brittles. Some time ago there appeared a set of rules figures and guide books mixing these cinematic spectacles with a dose of American History called the "Yellow Ribbon" range. I recently received their newest offerings.

The first was an updated booklet covering the period called "AND CONTINUALLY WEAR THE BLUE". While not a uniform guide or a rule supplement this little work is an excellent summary of the organization and structure of the American plains cavalry and their Indian foes. It is also a very good scenario guide for re-fighting some of the most noted battles between them.

The artillery, generals and dismounted troopers figures are of medium heft and 15mm high (Barrett Measurement). The sculpting is quite delicate and make for a really nice figure. Both the mounted officers and the gunners may fill in just fine in your Civil War armies too. The guns are smallish as they should be for wild west work and there is a perfectly delightful all-purpose wagon. All in all a good range just getting better.

They are available from ULSTER IMPORTS LTD PO Box 32, Mason IL 62443 at about $5 per bag. If you have been tinkering with the idea of colonial gaming, why not give our own style a chance. Haven't you always wanted the Duke to tell you to sound the charge!
