When the idea of doing a game designer census was first presented to me, I turned it down. It seemed to me that it would involve a lot of organizational work and that most designers would not bother to respond. Bill Stone, my assistant editor, volunteered to do the work (after all, it was his idea), and the response by the designers was gladdening. One of the most rewarding aspects of this survey was the many insightful remarks under the "Words of Wisdom" section (called "Words of wisdom, advice, or sarcasm concerning designing, gaming, etc:- on the questionnaire, which perhaps explains some of the more peculiar replies). While not everybody responded (OSG staffers are conspicuous in their absence, for example) and space did not permit coverage of all who did respond, a fairly comprehensive view of the game designers population is presented. One final note: The designers are presented alphabetically in order to avoid any controversy on order of presentation. A minimal amount of shuffling within this order was done so that no capsule biography would be split between two pages. The Game Designers
