Compendia

reviewed by Tom McMillen

In one of the best ideas to come along since the socket bayonet, the English Pike and Shot Society has made available Compendia consisting of an entire year's worth of articles, while omitting "transitory items" such as notices that the Brighton Club meets at the Drowning Duck on Thursdays. Currently available are 1977-1979.

1978, for example, includes 11 articles such as the Montrose Army, Rules for the Italian Wars, Wargaming with Samurai, the Battle of Solway Moss, the Indian Moghul Army, etc. What slight quibbles we have are that there is considerable emphasis on the ECW and the 17th Century in general, while earlier subjects are treated somewhat superficially at times, compared for example to the studies by Pat Condray and Curt Johnson in Gorgret and Sash. However, this is all very difficult material to find, and if you're a Renaissance gamer, and getting a dozen or so scholarly articles for E5 doesn't appeal to you, then friend, you're just plain pushin' lead.

The Compendia are available from Jeff Burton, 63 Beckingham Road, Guilford, Surrey GUZGBT, U.K. Costs are £ 5 for one, £ 9 for 2, £ 13 for 3. Payment in sterling payable to the 'Pike and Shot Society'.
