Raider Games Navy Lists

Age of Sail
Vol. VII 1787-1791

reviewed by Jon Williams

The navy lists from Raider Games keep getting better and better! This 9"x7" paperbound offset booklet by C.A. Sapherson and J.R. Lenton contains almost impossible-to-find information on the little-known but very interesting naval war between Turkey, Russia, and Sweden in the years 1787 to 1791. The war featured John Paul Jones, in the pay of the Russians, battling against the Turks on the Black Sea, while large forces ranging from capital ships to rowboats fought to a stalemate in the Gulf of Finland. During this war the Russian Navy, at the beginning almost a scratch force, came to maturity, and by the beginning of the 1790's the Russians were a naval power to be reckoned with. The book also gives the British forces fitted out during Pitt's "Russian Armament" of 1790, in which England almost joined the war in order to prevent the Russians from capitalizing on their gains.

Since the war is so little known in the West, the booklet begins with a short overview of the war that puts the fleet lists in their proper perspective, and which also features useful descriptions of the battles. The prose narrative is followed by the usual fleet lists, giving the forces as a whole, the ships present at each battle (down to galleys, udemas, and Russian "secret boats"), and maps of the engagements, which are particularly helpful in understanding the complicated battles in shallow and shoal water that were fought in the Gulf of Finland.

Information for this war is very hard to find, and not all has been uncovered by the authors. No native sources are available for the Turkish navy in this period, and the authors are forced to admit there are gaps in their knowledge. Nevertheless, prior to this booklet, no single source offered as comprehensive a look at this fascinating pre-Napoleonic conflict. This is simply the best thing around.

The book is available from Raider Games at 119 Elmete Way, Leeds, United Kingdom LS8 2ND.
