Festung Krieg Supplement

Vauban 1680-1820

reviewed by Tom McMillen

'Festung Krieg' is a supplement to 'Koenig Krieg', which is needed for its use, dealing with siege warfare. Those who have seen the Marlburian style forts in action at the past few major conventions are aware of the impressive creations that can be made with modules currently available. Much of the interest here lies in the creation of the fort, for which schematic diagrams and a chart of suggested dimensions are given. The rules themselves are very short and to the point, being only seven pages long with only about four being actually devoted to mechanics of play. Play consists of "Sorties or storms" to seize a limited objective, and of course the grand assault in which all available forces are thrown "into the breach". The battle of wits between a Vauban and a Marlborough appears to be well simulated, in a simple, no frills manner perfectly adaptable to any other period in which siege warfare was reasonably sophisticated.

Also included is "La Guerre Du Roi", an extension of 'Koenig Krieg' backwards from 1740 through the age of Marlborough. Both 'Festung Krieg' and 'La Guerre Du Roi', by Barry Gray, are available for $4.00 from the author: Apt. H, Bldg. 4, Parkwood Village Apts., South Amboy, NJ 08879.
