Franco-Prussian Figures

reviewed by Pat Condray

New releases include dismounted French and Prussian cavalry, and French and Prussian infantry firing prone. The cavalry includes Prussian Dragoon and Hussar, French Hussar, Chasseur d'Afrique, Dragoon, and what may be a Hussar with kepi. What I have said in the past about quality of WE Franco- Prussian releases is true of the cavalry.

These troopers with their sawed off shoulder arms and natty uniforms are a fascinating and necessary complement to the line, and certainly as good as any wargame figures anywhere. The prone figures are a logical addition for this period, and quite acceptable. I don't find them as spectacular in design and execution as the rest of the line but the shortcomings, such as the thumb of the right hand of the prone jager looking a bit like flash, are trivial and only come to light in the context of this extraordinarily detailed series.

One word of caution. At least at the time of the first part of this series and the WE painting the guide the designers and writers do not seem to have known about the distinction between line and guard eagles. The guard infantryman has lace on collar and cuffs, but a line eagle. The helmet eagle that most resembles a guard eagle is the one on the infantryman marching with greatcoat.
