RAFM 20mm Vietnam

Figures

Reviewed by Bill Rutherford

I've three packs of these figures - an American Viet Nam era rifle squad, heavy weapons squad, and command group, packed ten to a pack. They run about 21ML Barrett (from soles to eyes) and are, by and large, nicely done. I've got so used to seeing exaggerated, dwarflike 20s that these seem almost lightweight by comparison - nice! Equipment is understated but cleanly detailed, and displays the very wide variety expected from the Viet Nam conflict. Some troops have regulation uniforms with rolled sleeves, one's wearing a T-shirt, there are what appear to be a couple of flak vests, and lots of extraneous equipment, including helmet band stick-ons. Poses are animated - lively, almost - but are convincing. Two of the standing, firing, troops (with M16s), properly have their weight on their rear leg, with the front leg extended just a bit for balance - something I've not seen on gaming figures before. The fellow standing firing a shotgun is firmly braced against the recoil. The M-79 gunner is fairly relaxed. A couple of the kneeling figures aren't all scrunched down, but are in that extended sort of kneel you get into when you really don't want to get soaking wet because of the "stuff" you're kneeling in… All in all, a nice group of figures. I plan to use mine in vignettes with 1/76th scale models, not for gaming, which is something few gaming miniatures can aspire to… There appear to be about 15 packs available, split between American Army and Marines, VC, and NVA. Available from RAFM, at 155 B Copernicus Blvd., Brantford, Ontario, Canada N3P 1N4. Recommended!

More Courier Reviews

The Courier uses the Tobey Barrett Measurements System (BM) to simplify the comparison of figure sizes one to another. Briefly the number is the height in Millimeters from the bottom of the figure's foot (top of the base) to it's eye. The letter refers to the "heft" of the figure: L = Light; M = Medium;; and H = Heavy. H will fit well with other H and somewhat with M but not at all with L even in the same scale. thus a 27 M is a larger 25mm figure of Medium Heft.
