Gripping Beast
25mm El Cid

Figures

Reviewed by Terry L. Gore

I recently received a pack of three 25mm foot figures from the new Gripping El Cid line. As I have purchased a number of the manufacturer's Viking, Saxon and Norman figures in the past, I was anxious to see how this line fared in relation. Though not as well sculpted and animated as the Viking line, these are still nice figures. Standing 28mm (Barrett Scale) tall and of medium build, the foot figures are of an unarmored Spanish warrior, with Norman kite shield, knee length tunic, nasel helmet and spear, being thrust overhand as he marches steadily forward. This is a good action figure with the right attitude, closing on his enemy, his mustached face grimly set for the coming fray. The second figure is of a Moorish warrior, right out of the Charlton Heston movie! His face is covered with a cloth veil. He is also unarmored, carrying a shield and wearing a long, flowing tunic. He is likewise thrusting overhead with a spear and is walking confidently forward. The third figure is much like the first, although he carries a figure 8 shield. His tunic is as long as the Moor and he also carries a spear, or javelin (if cut down). Like I said, these figures do not have the detail of the earlier lines, but are still nicely done and will fit in well with many other late 11th, early 12th century Medieval armies (Siclians, for instance). Prices are $5.30 for a pack of four foot, or $2.98 for a cavalry figure and horse. Available from Brookhurst Hobbies, 12188 Brookhurst St., Garden Grove, CA 92840.

More Courier Reviews

The Courier uses the Tobey Barrett Measurements System (BM) to simplify the comparison of figure sizes one to another. Briefly the number is the height in Millimeters from the bottom of the figure's foot (top of the base) to it's eye. The letter refers to the "heft" of the figure: L = Light; M = Medium;; and H = Heavy. H will fit well with other H and somewhat with M but not at all with L even in the same scale. thus a 27 M is a larger 25mm figure of Medium Heft.
