25mm Buffalo Soldiers

Pass of the North

by Bob Beattie

Pass of the North (PotN) has been producing American west figures designed by Renee Perez for sometime now. Last year they continued the series with personality figures, both historical and Hollywood. Now Jeff Caruso has expanded the historical offerings with a wonderful range of "Buffalo Soldiers." These are the then-known-as "colored" cavalry regiments but more recently would be called soldiers of African descent. They are the perfect enemies of PotN's Apache range that has been around for sometime (and recently reduced in price to $1.25). The Buffalo Soldiers (a term I believe is politically correct given the fact the U.S. Postal Service has released a stamp so named) are in campaign dress with each figure wearing a different "uniform" variation. Some have scarves, some suspenders, some cross belts and so forth. Figures are cast with a variety of heads, kepi and various brimmed hats. There are 7 dismounted and 3 mounted poses. Number BF3 is firing pistol and can be used for a guidon bearer or horse holder; other poses are advancing, firing and officer and bugler. These are $1.25. The gunfighter range has been expanded to include 4 new poses: long coat with 2 pistols, derby and short jacket with pistol and same firing shotgun from hip, and firing shotgun from shoulder. Just in time for Wyatt Earp scenario games. These are $2.00.

Both ranges are cast in pewter, well formed, no flash, wonderful details, a joy to paint. (With all the great wild west figures coming from El Paso, someone will have to write a battalion level gunfight game, there are just too many good figures to do skirmishing). 25M on the Barrett Scale. * The Courier uses the Tobey Barrett Measurement [BM] System to simplify comparison of figure sizes. The number is the height in millimeters from the bottom of the figure's foot (top of base) to its eyes. The letter refers to the "heft" of the figure: L=light, M=medium, and H=heavy. Thus, Hs will fit in with other Hs and some Ms, but not Ls.
