Peter Berresford Ellis This covers the period from 1000 BC to 51 BC thus avoiding much of the decline and assimilation. Ellis has been an expert on the Celts for many a long year and is fortunately able to write in an entertaining fashion. He follows the Celts through their interaction with all the ancient cultures, considers their social and religious beliefs and points out some Famous Celts. We therefore see the invasions of Gaul, Spain, Italy, Greece and Asia Minor. The activities of the Celts as mercenaries are also included. Ellis views them not as Funny Loonies (as has often been the case in wargames) but as variously skilled warriors or tribal levies. After reading it one can see why these colourful peoples turn up on the wargame table quite as often as they do. Old Duffer's Book Corner Book Reviews
