Philippe Masson for Editions Perrin The French Army has so bestrode the military history of Europe that its more recent history is perhaps neglected over here. So much is it neglected that I am obliged to read this mighty tome in French. It is a story full of events. The high-hopes and savage reality of the Great War, the War won, but the Peace lost, the sudden collapse in 1940, the divided loyalties of the Vichy era, the return to Europe, the attempts at re-establishing French imperium in Indochina and Algeria, and finally the reduced army in the nuclear period. One would have wished for more maps, but this is not a tale of detail, but a general history of the army rather than its campaigns. Old Duffer's Book Corner Book Reviews
