This is a very useful book of memoirs to read alongside (say) Packenham. Without a stronger narrative structure or better maps it can be hard to follow the actions, but one is always in there seeing how it looked from the pointed end. Despite having nearly ten times more men than the Boers the Brits could be outnumbered by the Boers in the number of teeth that such a tail could support. Certainly this was the case after the blockhouses were fully operative. Although Black Week is not forgotten most of the book follows the other activities of the Army.
