Dictionnaire des Maréchaux de France

Old Duffer's Book Corner

Thoroughly useful summary of the careers, family and other bits and bobs of all the Marshals of France from Albert Clement (1190) to Koenig (1984). The rank of Marshal has passed through the houses of Capet, Valois, Orleans, Bourbon, Bonaparte, Bourbon, Orleans and Bonaparte, and then through five Republics. It is an excellent example of the French Exception (no tidy consistency here). We meet characters like Trivulzio, many Montmorencies, the Napoleonic commanders who became Marshals later. Men whose homes were Ireland, Livonia, India, Italy and many other places rose to this splendid rank. Although the text is in French I doubt that would delay many of you. It is not often one encounters a book of use to most periods - but this is such a book. Each biography includes a useful bibliography. Costs about £14.
