Charles Allen for Abacus
The lives of the low ranking East India Company officers who made the Northwest Frontier. Men like Nicholson, Abbot, and Lumsden are in the middle of the First and Second Sikh Wars and the Mutiny. They form famous regiments, rule vast fiefs and do so with much less of the cant that characterised the later Raj. This is splendid stuff, well told without being too much a hagiography.
