Ian Beckett for Longman
Another in the Modern Wars In Perspective Series. As always the analysis is effective and intriguing. However, (unlike most books in the series) there is very little chronological history in this book, the work is entirely thematic. The result is very good at showing hoe states developed and grew under military stimulus, yet without eschewing the military elements. The constant compare-and-contrast procedure works well. It cannot sadly be recommended as a first book on the subject because it assumes a degree of knowledge of narrative history.
