Wargames Foundry

25mm Boers

by Bob Beattie

Over the past 6 months, Wargames Foundry has been releasing figures suitable for the Boer War, 1899-1901. They offer both British and Boers. Here I want to discuss just the Boer infantry. There are 19 action poses plus a wounded and killed pose. Leading the set is a commandant with slung rifle and a beautiful mauser pistol, other poses are standing firing, kneeling firing, standing loading, kneeling loading, running, prone, and lastly a very versatile figure firing shotgun from the hip. The figures are cast in bright white metal with excellent detail, minimal to no flash. The size is the average 25mm and compatible with the other major firms - Falcon, Ral Partha, and MiniFigs. The kneeling figures are particularly well proportioned. All figures are dressed in similar civilian-style clothes but have different faces and hats. These figures could be used for a variety of civilian types with only minor conversion such as taking off the belts. I can see them as carving knife brigade in Peking, as Hereros, and other various militia types. The Boer range also contains 4 mounted figures. Human figures are $1.00 and horses are $1.30 (1 hope no one will take offense at this small suggestion, but I wish designers would leave hats "un-turned up" so gamers can customize figures with a variety of turns).

Let me mention an item from the British side of the Boer War range. This is a very nice Maxim gun with two man crew. The kneeling crew have the 1900 style uniform and are in sun helmet with cloth in back. The gun is on a tripod. Cost is $4.00. Available from Pendragon.
