Mein Panzer WWII Battlecard Drop-in #1

Review by Bill Rutherford

This modular add-on to the Mein Panzer system comes with a two-page instruction folder and 48 perforated (but not cut out) random events cards. The idea with these cards is that, under certain circumstances during the initiative phase, one player may have the option to draw a card from the deck of random event cards. At some later point during the game, that player may then play the card upon the active unit (friend or foe). Both sides may get the opportunity to draw cards and cards may be replaced during play. The idea is to allow the player to fool with the other side’s game-table karma.

Card results are generally diced for and provide a range of possible outcomes (including critical failure) on each card, e.g., a “smoke” card might have results, ranging from lots of smoke, to some smoke, to no smoke, to pass the card to the enemy player… The cards in this supplement are generic but the back-cover copy says that future releases may include cards specific to certain theaters or eras. You may have an issue with the fact that one player can twist fate against the other; initially, I did. Then it occurred to me - this is what Napoleon meant about liking lucky generals - they got the good random events cards! If you don’t play Mein Panzer, these cards are generally usable with whatever rules you do use… Available for $7.95 from your local game shop or, failing that, directly from Old Dominion Game Works, at PO Box 1456, Winchester, VA 22604-7956.
