Viking Forge

1/300 Post WWII

review by Bill Rutherford

Some time ago, in a comparative survey, I commented that Viking Forge was a new company that showed a bit of promise. Well the promise proved true. Though by no means as prolificas the major companies (the owner has, after all, a "real"job doing something else...), Viking Forge has come outwith a numberof interestingand very different items, and each new release is just a bit better than the last. The F7F is a Korean War vintage night fighter; this is its first release by anybody in this scale. General shapes are pretty good (with possible exception of wingtips) and the casting is fairly clean.

The CH54 Tarhee is a postwar U.S. heavy lift helicopter - the model (which comes in 4 pieces) looks "right" - I've only been able to compare the CH54 to a couple of photos - and is clean; I expect it to paint up well. The Vasilek and the 160mm Mortar are both nicely done. The Vasilek, a hi-tech Soviet automortar, seems a pinch big, but paints up well. The 160mm is well cast and detailed. This is a fairly common Soviet heavy mortar, but, to my knowledge has never been produced in 1 /300th scale. Viking Forge is slowly carving itself a niche in the realm of esoteric modern equipment - I look forward to further releases. Available for $2-$3 per pack from Viking Forge, 1727 Therresa Lane, Powhaten VA 23129.
