William III at War

review by Tom McMillan

William III at War - Scotland and Ireland 1689-1691 by Alan Sapherson, (apparently the driving force behind Raider Games), is a particularly good example of just how such a study should be done. About 60 pages long, the first third is a comprehensive description of the forces involved in terms of organization, strength, training, morale, uniforms, standards, etc. A short but lively and very informative account of the action follows, focusing in particular on the Boyne (unfortunately Dundee and the Highlanders over in the Scottish theatre get but passing mention), which is followed by thirty pages of charts, tables, and various other appendices.

To give some idea of the wealth of information presented, over 60 individual units are given, with "paper strength", for the Williamites at the Boyne, while for Aughrim the casualties suffered by each of the 45 individual troops and regiments of the Williamite army are listed to the man. This booklet does not contain a single line of filler, but rather consists entirely of hard, useful data or narration which is succint and to the point. Again, the price is not listed.

Raider Games products are available in this country from George Nafziger, 8801 Tammy Dr., W. Chester, Ohio 45609.
