Britannia Miniatures

25mm Crimean War

review by David Raybin

Another line of imported figures covering the Crimean War is the new release from Britannia Miniatures. Although billed as 25mm, they are actually in excess of 30mm and are probably the largest figures I have ever seen in this "scale". The first release includes Russian infantry in helmets and caps, all wearing greatcoats. The poses include advancing and firing figures as well as standard bearers, drummers and officers, both on foot and mounted. The British infantry includesfootguards and highlanders. There is a considerable amount of detail on the figures and the highlanders are rather nice.

The problem, however, is that some of the figures have a degree of distortion. In particular, the Russian officer looks more like an oversized dwarf whose head and arms are larger than his legs. The standard bearers are cast with a flag, something which should be avoided in a figure in this scale. The mounted officers, on the other hand, are really quite good and have no distortion at all. In all instances the uniforms appearto be accurate and depict the troops in full dress as worn during the first months of the conflict. The figures have virtually no flash, and, except for a few odd looking individuals, the line is another welcome addition to the Crimean War era. The figures cost $4.00 for six foot figures or three cavalry with slighly higher prices for specialty figures. They are available from Simtac who regularly advertises in this magazine.
