Essex

25mm Sassanid Persians

review by John Boehm

Wargames, Box 278, Route 40 East, Triadelphia, WV 26059 has submitted samples of the Essex 25mm Sassanid Persians for review. The range consists of the following:

1WS: Early Clibanari wearing a short sleeveless tabard over mail, a round helmet, bow case, quiver, and upright lance.
2WS: Late Clibanari with mail face covering, round helmet, bow case, a really nice quiver, and thrusting overarm with lance.
3WS: Cataphract with mail face covering, conical helmet, and upright lance.
4WS: Light Cavalry with shield, round hat, bow case, and throwing a javelin.
5WS: Spearman with rectangular wicker shield, typical round hat, cloak, and advancing with upright spear.
6WS: Archer with conical hat, firing.
7WS: Slinger with a Phrygian cap, shield, and sling raised to throw.

These are all nice clean, well detailed and well proportioned figures as one would expect from Essex, although they are perhaps not as well animated as some of their other lines, the cavalry being slightly more animated than their infantry counterparts. For those of you with ideas of expanding an existing Sassanid army, be advised that like other Essex figures they are actually closer to 30mm than 25mm. In fact some of these figures were taller than 30mm. The price is 90 cents per figure; horses vary in price with type.
