Military Modelling Guide
to Military Dioramas

review by William A. Greenwald

The Military Modelling Guide to Military Dioramas, by Graham Dixey, is another in a growing series of books published by Argus Books. Dealing with another aspect of historical miniatures, Graham has demonstrated his vast knowledge of a craft that has awed novices and experts alike.

The combination of photos and easy reading text makes Mr. Dixey's book an excellent reference for anyone wishing to design and execute any of the many forms of dioramas. from the single figure vignette to the boxed diorama, the author covers each type and scale with the detail that comes from years of experience.

The first few chapters deal with the appeal and planning of dioramas. Specifically helpful is Graham's treatment on the making of the diorama base. Chapter three covers the tools and materials that can be used in the diorama construction. Chapter4 is dedicated to the vignette. This, a form of its own, is described as "an introduction to the art of diorama modelling". It is probably the easiest way to get started.

The next four chapters cover the topics of Groundwork, Trees and Natural Vegetation, Representing Water, and Buildings, Bridges and manmade features. Each in turn describes various aspects of the subject, including both hand-made and purchased items, detailing and weathering, and special effects. Amongst the more interesting effects described is the representation of falling water and ice, and the making of cobblestone roads.

Chapter 9 is a start-to-finish example of a diorama from planning to completion. The next chapter is all about boxed dioramas. It includes very important details such as lighting, backdrops, and perspective. The final chapter covers the use of smaller scales than 54mm. The different scales and models available, in both metal and plastic, from full round to flats, give the modellerawide range to choose from in designing and building their diorama. All in all, Mr. Dixey has produced an excellent reference book on the art of diorama modelling.
