Hinton Hunt

25mm Napoleonics

review by Jim Arnold

Some 20 years ago the most complete lines of 20-25mm Napoleonic figures were produced by an eccentric Englishman named Marcus Hinton. The figures were so good that several Americans copied (to put it gently) his designs and sold inferior knockoffs here in America. A few years back I read that the line of original molds were being sold at auction. I now learn that an American, David Clayton, purchased the molds and is gearing up to sell them from his home in Florida.

I wrote David to inquire and received an enthusiastic response and some sample figures. I'm pleased to report that the figures are slightly better than the original Hinton Hunts since they have less flash. Otherwise, it's like looking at old friends; anatomically correct, accurate details, a wide variety of nationalities and poses. His figures match well with ESCI plastics and HO scale buildings. They provide a gamer who is just beginning an economical way to choose something larger (and to my mind therefore something much more visually pleasing) than 15mm scale.

Mr. Clayton does not presume to compete with commercial lines. Rather he seeks to fill a unique niche by offering true 20mm wargame figures to dedicated wargamers at a good price. He requires a high minimum base order, $50.00, but in return offers: individual footand cavalry (with horse) at $.50 and $1.00 respectively; bulk orders of 12 or more foot or 8 or more mounted at $.35 and $.70, respectively. If interested, contact: David Clayton, P.O. Box 5101, Hudson, FL 34674-5101.
