Tumbling Dice Miniatures

1/600 WWII Aircraft

by Bill Rutherford

On-hand are five samples – ISA41 - 45, a Spitfire I, Hurricane I, Defiant, Blenheim I, and Battle, respectively. Considering their diminutive size, the aircraft are well-detailed, with engraved panel lines, canopy framing, and other detail which, though somewhat exaggerated “in the raw”, subdues to a reasonable level under a layer of paint. Scale-wise, the Spitfire, Hurricane, and Blenheim are all several percent short in both length and width, the Defiant is likewise oversize, and the Battle is within a percent or two of proper size in both dimensions.

In this scale, though, the “look” of the aircraft is as important as absolute scale and these aircraft look right. Decals might be a challenge – a few are available in 1/700 scale for various plastic kits but I’m unaware of any others.

All told, 94 aircraft types – including bombers, fighters, seaplanes, recce aircraft, etc. – are available for the six major WWII combatants (sorry – no French!), as well as several starter packs. Before passing off with “Too small!”, consider the popular “narrow seas” theme – WWII small boat combat with MTBs, S-Boats, etc. The most popular scale for this variety of naval wargaming is – you guessed it – 1/600! These planes provide virtually the variety you’d need to provide any sort of air component imaginable to these games…

Anyway, most aircraft sell six for $2.98, though larger ones come fewer to a pack, e.g., the Blenheim comes 4 to a $2.98 pack. This range should be available at your local gameshop. Failing that, they’re available directly from their U. S. distributor, Brookhurst Hobbies, at 12188 Brookhurst St., Garden Grove, CA 92840, by phone at (714) 636-9150, or directly from their website at http://www.brookhursthobbies.com. I recommend their website as it includes a full listing of the Vapor Trails range, as well as color photos of a number of the aircraft. If you game in this scale, recommended!
