1/285 Modern Micro Armor

by Bill Rutherford

I’ve just received seven new modern releases from GHQ, six of which comprise their new “Third World” range and the seventh, AC38, an MH-53J Pave Low helicopter.

Taking the last first, I really don’t know a whole lot about the MH-53J so I built the kit. There are 18 white metal and eight etched brass parts (the rotors); they break down logically and go together without trouble. Built-up, the helicopter well captures the look of the prototype – take a look at some pictures of the real thing at the US Air Force’s photo web page on the type at http://www.af.mil/photos/helicopters_mh53.shtml then take a look at the picture of the built-up model above and on GHQ’s website at http://www.ghqmodels.com/M/item/AC38 to see what I mean. It looks the part.

The other six items are quite varied. TW1 and TW2, Mujahadin Infantry and Heavy Weapons, respectively, consist of 56 separately-based figures including running and kneeling riflemen (well, AK-men), advancing LMG gunners, RPG gunners, and a single Stinger operator in the former and 50 weaponeers (prone LMGs, light mortars, RPG gunners, and a pair of Stinger gunners), and 10 pack mules. They’re well-posed and cleanly cast, and are well suited to wargaming Afghanistan any time in the last 30 years or so. These troops are all around 6M Barrett…

TW3 consists of four Gaz-66 trucks with ZU-23-2 23mm AA guns ported on their beds, TW4 includes four Gaz-66s with Type 63 MLRs on their beds, TW5, five BMPs with ZU-23-2s on their decks, and TW6, five Toyota Crew Cab pickup truck “Technicals” with HMGs. The vehicles are up to GHQ’s usual high standards, finely detailed, and simply cast – that is, just as many parts per model to enhance the detail, but no more than necessary.

If you’re a modern gamer in 1/285 - 1/300 scale, you’ll like these. Get them at your local gameshop for $8.95 per pack. If they don’t have them, go directly to GHQ at 28100 Woodside Road, Shorewood, MN 55331, or go to GHQ’s website at http://www.ghqmodels.com to see a complete catalog. Just about everything in GHQ’s line is illustrated, including everything in this review!
