The Sun Never Sets

Colonial Campaign

by Dick Bryant

20 years ago, The Courier printed a set of campaign rules for the British Colonial period written by Dave Waxtel. Our club – Old Colony Wargamers had a lot of fun with these rules that generated battles to be played with Larry Brom’s The sword and The Flame.

On the 20th anniversary of that first publication. Larry’s company, And That’s The Way it Was has reproduced the rules. I say “reproduced” but that is far from the truth! Larry, with help from Dave, Patrick Wilson and Chris Feree have completely re-done the presentation of these rules! They now have a full color map, cards and map counters to make the play easier and more exciting than our sterile attempt – oh so long ago!

The rules now include modifications and optional rules first proposed by the late, and sadly missed, Lynn Bodin and have added naval rules an more.

Twenty years ago the game concept was an innovation and still is. The players play BOTH the British and the natives. They meet in “parliament” to decide how funds will be allocated, where to send forces, etc reacting to chance event cards. When a battle ensues the player who has those natives goes to the battle board against the British player who commands in that area and a TSATF game is played out.

While I only played this with TSATF, there is no inherent reason why it can’t be played with any set of colonial period rules. OCW will soon attempt it using “Battles for Empire”.

We still talk about some of the games generated by these rules twenty years ago – The Durban Turkey Shoot comes to mind where the British expeditionary force had to come ashore from boats against well hidden Boers with longer ranged rifles, or the time the force at the mission had to rescue the relieving column from the Chinese!
