My first impression of Terry Gore's new rules are that they are a very complete package. And so it proved to be, almost too complete. Our play test game had multiple seasoned players per side. No one had any difficulty with the flow of play, once we had gotten past understanding what troops each person had and what they 'could' do. The game proceeded easily with a feel of DBM familiarity. One memorable action was of a couple stands of Skirmish Cavalry threatening to flank a Knight attack. The attack was then thrown into such awful confusion with 'Disordered' markers and attempting to resume the initial attack that the game perhaps should have been - with more experience - won and lost right there. Personal likes: The rule book came with a separate quick reference sheet; Simultaneous movement; Order chits; Rated Generals; A 90 count army list and Scenarios. Personal dislikes: Complex, eg: infantry has 7 classifications; 3 possible weapons variations; 6 levels of morale grade; and two training grades. This translates into, slow and confusing for newcomers. Also the order chits come on a printed sheet which is not possible to cut up into equal sizes. Therefore an order of 'defend' is a physically longer chit than 'hold'- something of a giveaway if you are enough of a cad to look for such things, (I'm told). Overall though, a good set of rules and well worth the price of $20. Should be played often to get the full benefit. The optional 'Heroes' and Priests' rules look interesting. As I said, a very complete package. Available from the author at 890 Janes Rd. Rochester NY 14612 More Reviews
