Covered in Glory

Napoleonic Rules

These are tactical level rules for 15mm and 25mm Napoleonic Miniature Wargaming written by Donald Enevoldsen and published by Pickle Enterprises Historical Wargaming with 112 pages, photos, illustrations, and 5 charts. With the trend of the last few years being towards lager battles and scales of 1/60 or 1/100 with abstracted tactical rules. Covered in Glory moves us back to 1/20 figure ratio and detailed tactics. A large battle for this set of rules would be one or two divisions on each side with some cavalry on each side. The rules are designed with each turn representing two minutes of real time; it can take up to five turns for the companies in a battalion to form square. Mounting is similar to the EMPIRE system as far as figure frontages and basing. Instead of a battalion represented by three stands of four figures for French line, Covered in Glory uses two stands of three figures with a 3/8th inch frontage per figure for a company. Within the battalion, the placement of companies is critical to the effectiveness of the battalion. This is the heart of the rules is the squadron/company system. The effective movements of companies must be precise to keep the unit effectiveness. There are no instant formation changes at the battalion level. (timing is everything) Remember the four or five turns needed to make the change to square, the change to square would have to start before the cavalry charge starts. The author also outlines two systems of drill and the mechanics for replicating them. In this case the French and Prussian systems are the described.

The tactical mechanics of Covered in Glory are relatively simple. The charts included ease play and provide tables that, for the most part, seem to include all the possible relationships and situations in an easy to read system. Rather than one chart modifies by a bunch of situations the author has made one chart for each type of unit and included the situations on the charts. I believe that because you can use your current mounting and just treat your old regiments as battalions that this will be an interesting change for most Empire-type system players. The booklet is will designed and organized and is attractively packaged .
