Slim: The Standardbearer

Book Review

By the Old Duffer

Ronald Lewin reprinted by Wordsworth

The British army is a remarkable institution, but who (as the old saw goes) wants to live in an institution? Well Bill Slim did, he obviously enjoyed every moment of being a soldier (though his highly self-critical faculties may not have assisted when he rose to high command) despite not being from the traditional officer castes. Combining rare good sense and an unflappability it appears he did not feel Slim was (I think) the finest commander Britain produced in the war. Of course if you are several pages ahead on Slim already then you do not need this book. Lewin takes ignoramuses like myself (who have read Defeat Into Victory and played two games on Burma) and makes us see the rounder man. Full of splendid quotes, I read it on the Eurostar and very good it was indeed.
