Emilio Lussu for Prian (trans. Marion Rawson) "All Quiet on the Italian Front" might be the best summary. Lussu is a young officer on the Asiago front. The scene with his mother and father is very good, as is the character of the insane General Leone. Written with tremendous calm it avoids the emotional excitement of English war poetry (so much then for silly national stereotypes). More Old Duffer's Book Corner (book reviews)
