Husaria: The Winged Horsemen

Book Review

This is a Polish and English book on the Eagle-Hussars of Poland. The book has a lot of very impressive photos of Husaria kit as well as some of the famous paintings of the Husaria revival of the second half of the 19th Century. There are three sections to the book. The first deals with the history, employment and kit of the Husaria. The second deals with their Hetmani (ending with John III). The third (on the legend) includes some great paintings starting with Jan Matejko's Batory pod Pskovem in which Stephan Batory accepts the tribute of the Boyars (one for those who don't buy into the Gallant Poland myth - this is panskya Poland country). Then Kossacks's Husaria pod Kircholmem in which the impudent Swedes of Charles XI get ridden over. Rather more sober is Piwnicki's Zóliewski pod Cercorq in which Stanislaw Zóliewski faces death at the hands of the Turks. The book fair buzzes with the stench of testosterone and horse, hooey-rah Lord God!
