Warfare in Atlantic Africa 1500-1800

Book Review

By the Old Duffer

John Thornton for UCL

The book takes us from the Gambia down to Angola summarising what is known of the states of these areas and their combat style. The range of so large an area takes us from riverine forces through infantry to full cavalry on the savannah. The subject of the influence of slaving on the warfare of the area is discussed but not ultimately resolved. The book includes much that is useful though the need for better maps in an era where nearly every state is unknown is considerable. This is Africa before the European armies trusted to breechloaders. The forerunners of the modern boy soldiers are to be discovered.
