An Epitome of The Afghan War by Major J.H.V.Crowe

A very useful summary and description of the Second Afghan War for those of you with a copy of Joe Miranda's game. A sort of storyboard-in-waiting.

Battles of the Nineteenth Century Various

Short summaries of battles and campaigns by various authors. These works were usually collected in one or two volumes and were not intended as works of academic study. Much beloved of the Colonial figure-gamer who can get a good summary of his topic I find them useful for just such a purpose. Gareth has reprinted The Fall of Constantine, the Battle of Isly, the Spanish Battles in Morocco (1859 to 1860) [General Prim et al], the siege of La Puebla 1863, the capture of Son-Tai, and the 1892 Dahomey Campaign. Major Griffiths also does a rather good introduction to the whole topic (with a chronology by Atteridge).

Captain Mahan on Maritime Power The Edinburgh Review (1890 and 1893)

Gareth has been plundering this magazine for reviews of contemporary military history books. A review in The Edinburgh Review was not a few pages including a cheap witticism, it can be over 50 pages and usually written by an expert on the period. As a result this review of two of Mahan's books The Influence of Sea Power Upon History and The Influence of Sea Power Upon the French Revolution and Empire together with Admiral Coulomb's Essays on Naval Defence. Some very interesting comments on Mahan's work that has stood the test of time if not of revisionism.
