The Napoleonic Wars 1803-1815

Book Review

By the Old Duffer

David Gates for Arnold

This book endeavours to give a real history of the wars without giving a history of the campaigns. He is rather patchy in this but sufficiently good to allow one to stand back and survey the scene. The economic warfare with Britain is separately charted, as is the analysis of why the French grew tired of Napoleon. The political and economic coverage is useful but I wonder at some of the analysis. Gates has a habit of deriding others without fully explaining why, which is not, of course, to say he is wrong. When Renaud Verlaque's Age of Napoleon comes out you will find this a useful tome.
