Merrimac Miniatures

15mm Paddle Steamer

Reviewed by Greg Rice

Merrimack Miniatures' new 15mm resin paddle steamer is based on the "Far West," which carried Custer's wounded. The waterline model is 12" long with a 3" beam, and stands about 6" high to the top of the stacks. There is about an inch clearance between decks so 15 mm figures on reasonable bases will fit nicely. The upper deck is supported on 15 dowel columns which fit into sockets on the main deck. The heavy resin castings have exaggerated surface detail which makes for easy painting. The parts fitted well, with only a few casting pits and a reasonable amount of sanding and adjustment required. The biggest problem was that the columns were about 2 mm short, easily rectified by cutting new dowel pieces. A crude but adequate assembly diagram is included, as was a color catalog sheet with a picture of the painted model. This is a representational (not fine scale) model, appropriate for the American Civil War, Colonial, and Old West wargames. With a bit of ingenuity, details of the stern wheel housing, firebox connections, ladders, railings, and grasshoppers could be added to make a handsome model. As supplied it is a sturdy model well-suited to the games table. $40 from Merrimack Miniatures, 1524 Lois Dr, Shoreview, MN 55126, tel (612) 786-1526, email CBENN92586@aol.com
