These were regarded as excellent troops. They were used to garrison Italian holdings in Etritea and Somaliland. During the war, they conducted a campaign against Senussi tribes in North Africa. Their uniform was a red fez with a long white tunic and white trousers. During the war they are also recorded as wearing the Italian khaki colored uniform instead of the white attire.
