The Persian Cossack Brigade with (8000 men) Russian officers was regarded as a key force in the Army of the Shah of Persia. They dominated the northern part of Persia and often conducted missions against local tribes and the pro-German Swedish Gendarmes (7000 men). In the South the British raised the South Persia Rifles. In 1916 the British led a force of the South Persian Rifles and a contingent of Cossacks (600) on an expedition in which they destroyed and scattered the troops of the Swedish Gendarmes and supporting bandit tribes. In 1918 a serious threat to the Persian Shah was defeated by a combined force of the British South Persia Rifles and ‘White’ Russian Cossacks.
