World War I: Unique Units

Pershing in Mexico: Battle of Carrizal

by Rudy Scott Nelson

In 1916 USA forces under General Pershing entered Mexico with the implied support of the Mexican Government to capture the Mexican bandit Poncho Villa who had attacked towns in the USA. During the expeditions two troops of the US 10th cavalry regiment were attacked by units of the regular Mexican Army. Both sides reported heavy casualties. This would be a good scenario for a skirmish battle. It could also be used as the spark to start a second Mexican-American War. For painters the 10th cavalry (Ready Forward ! motto) was one of the two all negro cavalry regiments. The other was the 9th Regiment (Real Cav!) which was deployed in Asia.
