Greek War of Independence:
1821-33

Wargaming Notes on the Greek Revolution

This war is one of those overlooked conflicts which can be very colorful. Here is another use for those Napoleonic era Ottoman armies. Greek forces can be raised by using Zouaves and Ottoman European levy troops. Foreign intervention troops may be a little harder but several companies do make British troops for the First Afgani War and troops used for the Spanish Carlist Wars can be used for the French. Significant and What If Battles can provide challenging contaests at several levels. Due to the dominance of irregular troops, sieges and battles in mountain passes, this is a great venue for skirmish scenarios. As far as battles involving a large number of troops here are some possible battles. The most intriguing What If Battle occurred on 30 Aug 1828. The French landed 14,000 troops at Petalidi on Morea expecting to fight Ibrahim's Egyptians (about 12,000 infantry + 3000 cavalry) but the Egyptians had already agreed to an armistice and evacuation. This would provide for a challenging scenario.

Those naval gamers can find several challenging scenarios for use with both age of sail and early steamboat rules. The battle of Navarrino is an obvious choice for a large engagement. However, the heavy pirate activity will provide for numerous small and large battle scenarios.
