Chronology of Key Events: 1821

In several cases the dates of events varied from a few days to weeks between various sources. I decided to list whenever possible the date listed by the Greek General staff in their book.

1821

2 Feb Galatsi Moldavia. Greeks under Karavias rout local Turkish garrisons.

March ?? Morea 300 Klephts defeat 60 Albanian mercenaries

18 Mar Kalavryta. Local family (Petmezas) spurs revolt against the garrison.

21 Mar Near Kalavryta. Greeks (6000) defeat Turkish sotries and relief forces forcing the garrison to surrender.

26 Mar Chlemoutsi. The Greeks are repulsed in an assault on the fort.

27 Mar Near Chlemoutsi. A Turkish-Albanian relief column (400) defeat the Greek (1000) besiegers and releive the fort.

28 Mar Monembasia. Turkish garrison (4500) are besieged.

29 Mar Apheius River. A six hour battle between Greek Maniots (600) under Kolokotrone vs 1700 Ottomans who were trying to cross the Apheius river. The Turks are defeated.

30 Mar Malandrino. Turkish garrison syrrenders after a two day stuggle in the streets.

31 Mar Salesi. Ottomans (4000) defeat the Greek garrison and burn the town.

31 Mar Ora-Livadeia. Fort catured after three days of assaults on the walls.

Late March- April. Palas. Greeks assault the walls but fail. Town releived on 15 April.

April. Karytaena. The besieging forces (3000+) are routed by a Turkisn cavalry Charge (500)

April. Other sieges with a large number of insurgents include Coron (2000), Tripolitza (10,000), Acrocorinthos (8000), Patra (4000), Monemvasia (3000), Navarino/Modon (3000),Thebes, Atalante . A Turkish garrison (1150) holds the Acropolis in Athens.

April. Off Milos. Greeks= 8 brigs defeat Turks= Corvette + Brig.

3 April Patras. ottomans capture the city-island after brief resistance.

15 April Levidi. A Greek garrison (70) repel Ottoamn (3000) attacks until reinforced by other factions (400+). The Greek then launch a counter-attack which routs the Turks.

23 April Alamana. Greeks (500) defend the Alamana bridge -Spercheios river. The Turks force the crossing and kill 200 Greeks.

Alex Hypsilanti enters Rumania enroute to Greece. His force includes a personal 2000 man regiment, the Sacred Legion, Georgaki's Cavalry, Wallach cavalry and Vladimiresco"s 2000 Pandours. They were opposed by three Ottoman divisions. Greek leaders attempt to destroy small Turkish units before the main force encircles them.

6 May . Raid on Imbros. Four Greek ships land troops (100+) on Imbros surprising the Turks who retreat inland. Lagre quantities of munitions are captured from the port's fort.

8 May. Gravia Inn. Greeks (120) defaet a much larger Ottoman (1000+) force under Vryones.

12 May. Valtetsi. A lengthy battle between Greeks (~500) under Kolotrones and Turks (~3000) under Rubeh. The Turks retreated after suffering 800+ casualties.

18 May. Doliana. Greeks (300) ambush Ottoman (8000) relief force which suffers heavy losses.

7 June or 19 June, Dragashan Rumania. Turk (800) cavalry defeat the Greek vanguard of the Sacred legion + 500 Cavalry. The Greek army of 4000 infantry + 2500 Cavalry + 4 guns routs.

13 June, Pousi Mountain. Turks attempt to break the siege of Lala but are repulsed.

14 June, Loulo. Turkish Janissaries (60) offer a fierce defence of the town but are forced to retreat by the Greeks (300). (Not sure Janissaries were used in Greece)

16 June, Stinga. Turkish troops (700 mostly cavalry) engage in an escalating battle with Greeks /Rumeliots, Cretans and Mainots. Turks withdraw.

17 June, Skouleni, Romania. A series of forts held by Greeks (1000) are assaulted by Turks (6000). The Turks are repulsed with 1800 casualties compared to the Greeks 300+ casualties.

4 June Eastern Aegean. Turkish fleet (2 Ship of Line + 3 Frigates + 3 Sloops) engage Greek fleet of 20 Brigs. Some skirmishing but for the most part the Greeks remained at a distance.

5 June or 27 May, Bay of Eresos. Turkish Ship of Line anchored and attacked by 12+ Brigs. Brig attack proved unsuccessful and the Greeks made 3 attempts with fire ships until one worked.

4 July, Near Chania, Crete. Greeks defeat a Turkish (5000) expedition under Latif.

15 July Chania, Crete. Second battle between Greeks (100) and Turks (5000). Greeks won.

15 July, Vrysakia, Euboea. Turks (2000) rout Greek defenders inflicting 200+ casualties.

??? Vrachori. Greeks (40,000) defeat Albanians (600)

10 Aug, Tripolitsa. Turks attempt to break out of the city but are repulsed.

26 Aug, Valtetsi. Kolokotrones Greeks (2000) defeat a Turkish (8000 ft + 2000 Cav + 4 guns) releif force headed for Tripolitza which forces that town to surrender.

4 Sept Vasilka II. Ottomans (5000) vs Armatoli + Rumeliots (2000) under Odysseus.

15 Sept, Pente Pegadia. Greek Souliots repulse Turkish probe.

17 Sept, Pente Pegadia. Greek Souliots repulse a more serious Turkish attack

23 Sept, Tripolitsa. Turks surrender after a three month siege.

30 Oct, Kassandra. Turks (14,000) defeat Greeks (1500) after a fierce battle.

?? Dec, Palamidi. Greek assault on the town is repulsed.
