Franco-Prussians

by Pat Condray

Latest from this manufacturer in a series identified as Siege of Paris Civilians. Included were a man in a smock firing a musket, wearing a kepi, another in smock with the musket at waist, a citizen in top hat with a fowling piece, and a lady in a shawl who seems unperturbed by it all. Oh yes, there is a ruffian in bowler hat and smock firing a pepperbox pistol. The animation, anatomy, and detail warrant any superlative you can find - which is what we have come to expect from WF. I might suggest that the description is inexact. The two chaps with rifled muskets would more likely be Breton militia, who were often armed with war surplus ACW muskets. The Paris garrison pulled in most of the civilians over the months who were likely to bear arms and I believe there were arsenals and factories within the siege lines which could turn out Chassepot Fusil 67. One of them is dressed in a Prussian style soft cap which could cause him problems - but the one with the kepi would surely have grounds for claiming to be a soldier of some sort (although the Prussians might hang him anyway). As for the dapper bourgois gent in top hat, probably not the Siege of Paris. But, like the others, he could be pressed into service forany violent political disorder in France from 1830 to the Paris Commune of 1871.
