Snuggles and Bear

15mm Franco-Prussian War

Reviewed by Pat Condray

This series provides a fairly comprehensive range of Franco-Prussian and Bavarian troops for the 1870-71 war. Although the figures have been designed independently by U.S. sculptor Joel Haas, they bear a strong resemblance to mid-range Mike's Models. Anatomy is sacrificed for detail, particularly of the headgear and upper body. The pickelhaube, for example, shows front ornament, brass trim on the brim and down the back from the spike socket. The one horse position currently offered is very lively, posed in an all out gallop with mane and tail flying, and if it lacks variation in position it does havevariation in horse furniture to cover thedifferent cavalry types offered. The equipment is accurate except that the French cuirassier carries a carbine, which was not done between 1856 and 1897. The Bavarian chevauleger is advertised as a dragoon and therefore has a carbine in his hand -thefateofall dragoons in this series. Stands are also offered. Of interest to wargamers who do not see themselves as painters, painted figures are offered at reasonable prices. Unfortunately for some reason the artillery pieces are only half the size they should be.
