The Army of the German Empire
1870-1888

Osprey Men-at-Arms Series

This book by Albert Seaton is delightful, not only for its uniform plates, but because of its excellent background information on the evolution of the Brandenburg and Prussian army. It was in fact useful background information in my investigation of the Prussians in Marlborough's army. it is of course particularly good on the army between the 1806 reforms and the Roon reforms of 1860 or thereabouts. In some respects it is less so in its chosen period. it doesn't tell you when the cuirassier traded his revolver and breastplate for carbine and lance - 1887 1 think. it even implies that dragoons carried the lance in 1871 and that the cuirassiers in 1870 went to war with revolvers in their saddle holsters. In summary, the work tends to slur distinctions in equipment and armament which occurred during the 1870-88 period. I would recommend it to anyone interested in the period as a good general study of the Prussian army - just don't pay too much attention to the dates on the color plates.
