Simulation Study of Napoleonic Warfare

A Simulation Study of Napoleonic Warfare by Rudy Scott Nelson. Published by Nelson Enterprises. This is a set of Grand-Tactical miniature wargame rules for 15mm, 15mm, and 30mm Napoleonics. No remounting is required to use these rules. The game scale is one to sixty and one inch equals40 yards. There are 67 pages of 800 single spaced text and 5 cards of tables. To a certain extent, GUARD DU CORPS represents what many Napoleonic wargamers expected Empire III would be. The mechanics are similar to Empire II, which enables more battle to be simulated in an hour's playing time than can be duplicated by Empire III. This is a solid set of rules in its own right that represents years of work. There is a great deal of detail built into the rules system. Virtually every possibility is covered.

Although there are no great new innovations or gimmicks, the rules are excellent in a number of categories. First they are complete and well written; it is a clear system that seems easy to learn and introduce new players to the world of Napoleonics. There is an outstanding section on the fielding and organization of armies. Lastly, it accurately recreates the flavor of the Napoleonic Wars at the Division level and above. Even if you use another set of rules, GUARD DU CORPS would be a valuable acquisition just for the myriad of optional and situational rules.
