According to Polybius and Livy, major naval battles of the Punic Wars frequently involved hundreds of quinqueremes on both the Roman and Carthaginian sides. Because of the large numbers involved, wargamers interested in recreating these conflicts should consider the 1/3000 scale ships offered by Gallia Reproductions. There are three ships available. S9 is a Roman quinquereme with sail raised, cast on a base measuring 1" by 1/2". The ship itself is approximately 3/4" long with the upper portion of the rain visible in front. The sail and mast should not be too difficult to remove with a sharp knife to represent a ship in action. Sil is described as a Roman Man-of-War/Coast Guard. This ship is 3/8" long on a 5/8" by 1/2" base. It is not equipped with a sail. Unfortunately, it is ill proportioned, with longer oars and a ram only slightly smaller than the much larger quinquereme. The casting is excellent, with no flash, although the metal is very brittle. These ships will paint up very well, but the overriding attraction is the price. All packs are $2.00 each. S9 and S10 contain 5 Roman or Carthaginian quinqueremes respectively, and S11 contains 6 of the smaller ships. At 40 cents per ship it will be relatively economical to represent entire fleets. These ships are available in the US from Modelers Mart, 2071 Range Road, Clearwater, FL 33575, phone (813) 442-3822. Other Reviews:
